When Sh*t Hits the Fan

My name is David. Just a disclaimer, I still have both my hands, but I broke my left wrist and broke (and dislocated one piece of) my left scaphoid. This happened at around 8:00 last Thursday while I was running in the stage crew for My Fair Lady at Viewmont High School. Since then, I have had a hard time going around my daily life as normal with only one functional hand. I have made this blog with some basic everyday problems and what I find to be the best way to overcome these hurdles I now face until the first quarter of 2018. For those of you going through broken hands, or even amputation of one hand, this should be the place for you for the next couple months.

Update and atrophy

So today, I got my cast removed... ...and atrophy is real! My thumb will not move very much. However, I've had an idea that I am going to test. When I was a Junior in high school last year, fidget spinners and cubes were the fad of the year. Even today, I think the fidget spinner if therapeutic for my anxiety. I never got the come, though. At work today, a co-worker told me that playing video games would help bring my thumb back to speed. I liked the idea, but I had no idea how it would work when I'm not at home with my PS3 controller. Back to the fidget cube. They have a joystick on one side.  I figure if I had a fidget cube, my thumb's atrophy will be reduced faster than usual. I'm southpaw Dave, and this is my idea and update.

Slings and Chafing

One problem that someone who has ever worn a sling would know just how annoying it is when it starts to chafe. The band going across your torso making contact with your bare neck will eventually annoy you throughout the day, especially if you have a job and can't take many pauses to relieve it. I have this binder that I have to take to school instead of a backpack while my scaphoid heals. It has a shoulder strap and this padding on the strap that you can move around the strap. This gave me the idea to remove this padding and put it on the sling. Works like a charm. I went to a surgeon and discovered that my radius is perfectly fine, but the scaphoid is fractured. No surgery is needed, but I'm in a cast until around December 18. I'll keep updating this with discoveries and life hacks.
